PHP. and MYSQL
The only fistfight more common than OS is open source vs. non. We've been advocates on the open source end of the spectrum since 1998. We've watched and cheered as PHP developed, from version 3 to it's current version of 5. In our opinion there has been no other language that has done more for both open source software and the internet as a whole than PHP.
Behind the scenes
One of the strongest and most significant features in PHP is its support for a wide range of databases. MYSQL is perhaps the worlds most commonly used open source database (though we have used PHP in conjunction with others) due to it's simplicity and elegance. A decade's worth of experience creating php/mysql sites has convinced us that nothing offers more control to the site owner than this combination. The continuing rise in popularity of CMSs, CMFs and blogs tells us that the internet itself agrees.
